The developer of Dover Knolls has extensive successful experiences on similar sites and was recruited into the community back in 2003 because of its reputation. We continue to receive tremendous community support for the redevelopment.We are currently in the public review period for the state Draft Environmental Impact Statement, a 4,000-page report of potential impact of the proposed redevelopment on everything from jobs and schools to noise and greenhouse gases. In addition to two public hearings, our team is meeting with the many involved agencies such as the DOT, the DEC, Department of Health, and Dutchess County Planning. Once the public comment period is closed, the Dover town board, the lead agency for the project, will consider the comments made at the hearings and will produce the Final Environmental Impact Statement.

Environmental Health Urges Taxi Drivers to be Alert

In light of the H1N1 pandemic, the Environment Health Division of the Ministry of Health and Social Development urges taxi drivers to be alert and take the necessary precautions to safe guard their health as well as that of their passengers.

Chief Environmental Health Officer, Mr. Carnel Smith advises taxi drivers and tour bus operators to keep alcohol based hand sanitizers and tissues readily available in their vehicles. Mr. Smith stressed the importance of an alcohol base of at least 60 percent. He explained that “alcohol is a sterilizer, but not all hand sanitizers are alcohol based.”

Taxi or tour bus operators are advised to use the hand sanitizer especially after handling money and to ensure that the sanitizer is made available for use by passengers after they have coughed or sneezed. Tissues should also be provided along with a waste bin for their disposal.

“Eco-Atkins” diet is good for health and good for the environment

A diet low in calories and carbohydrates, but high in plant proteins, helped overweight individuals lose weight and improve cholesterol levels. Complete information is available in the June 8 edition of the Archives of Internal Medicine.

The authors discuss the “dilemma relating to the proportion and source of fat, protein, and carbohydrate that constitutes the optimal weight loss and cholesterol-lowering diet”. Atkins style diets emphasize reduced carbohydrates and increased animal protein. These diets are indeed effective for weight loss. However, diets high in animal protein tend to increase low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) or “bad cholesterol”.

The “Eco-Atkins” diet is low in carbohydrates, and it emphasizes plant-based proteins. This diet aided in weight lose, and it also aided in reducing LDL cholesterol. This diet is more suitable for individuals with concerns about heart disease.

Green groups say more action, less talk needed on environment

Green groups are stepping up their pressure on governments around Australia to make more progress on a range of environmental issues.

Some campaigners say they're tired of the slow pace of reform on issues ranging from container deposit legislation to a ban on plastic bags and what to do with the mountains of electronic waste created by TV sets, mobile phones and computers.

And as Simon Santow reports, they're hoping that a meeting of Federal, State and Territory environment ministers in Hobart today will bring meaningful change, rather than talk and more hollow announcements.

Obama Nominates Superfund Polluter Lawyer To Run DOJ Environment Division

President Barack Obama has nominated a lawyer for the nation’s largest toxic polluters to run the enforcement of the nation’s environmental laws. On Tuesday, Obama “announced his intent to nominate” Ignacia S. Moreno to be Assistant Attorney General for the Environment and Natural Resources Division in the Department of Justice. Moreno, general counsel for that department during the Clinton administration, is now the corporate environmental counsel for General Electric, “America’s #1 Superfund Polluter“:

Number five in the Fortune 500 with revenues of $89.3 billion and earnings of $8.2 billion in 1997, General Electric has been a leader in the effort to roll back the Superfund law and stave off any requirements for full cleanup and restoration of sites they helped create.
